OVERVIEW OF THE THEME

Save the Children has implemented integrated health and nutrition projects through a multi-sector programme to strengthen the process of ownership of activities by communities, health and administrative authorities in order to improve and sustain prevention, access and quality of care. In 2021, there are seven (7) projects in health, nutrition or including health and nutrition activities. This shows the importance of this theme at Save the Children.

 

 

HEALTH AND NUTRITION SUB-THEMES

 

SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH :

Support for ANC, ONC, childbirth activities in health facilities, training on clinical mentoring, training on Essential Newborn Care, promotion of the Kangaroo Method, fitting out and equipping rooms in mother and child centres as a skills laboratory for health staff on maternal and newborn health. Development of quality assurance modules and training of QA teams.

Extension of task delegation, DMPA SC, training on FP Post Parfum. 

Gender and gender-based violence (GBV)

 

YOUTH AND ADOLESCENT HEALTH:

Develop safe spaces for youth (for information and support) in health centres and villages

Identify out-of-school adolescents in the communities and the structures or organisations with which out-of-school adolescents interact for information and sensitisation sessions on reproductive health for out-of-school adolescents

Support life skills and adolescent reproductive health education services in schools and in the community 

Support health centres through rehabilitation to improve the quality of reproductive health care delivery 

Strengthen the capacity of 484 health workers on the prevention and management of cases of gender-based violence and on the minimum emergency package

Provide health centres with kits for the prevention of infections linked to gender-based violence

Provide health centres with reproductive health kits for emergencies 

Provide health centres with awareness-raising kits on reproductive health

Advocate with the authorities for adequate funding to improve menstrual hygiene in schools, integration of menstrual health management in public policies in Niger

Supporting municipalities in reproductive health budget analysis

 

NUTRITION:

Cascade training or retraining of project staff and health workers on the themes of ANJE, EHA, PFE 

Facilitate sessions on the themes of ANJE, EHA and PFE;

Distribute fortified flour for home supplementation to all children aged between 6 and 23 months in households benefiting from the cash transfer

Give cooking demonstrations during the distribution of fortified flour to the mothers of children aged 6 to 23 months who are recipients of the cash transfer 

Train women of childbearing age on PB screening techniques to improve early detection of acute malnutrition 

Support the screening of SAM and the community referral system for malnourished children

Support the management (PEC) of SAM in the CRENI and CRENAS

Train health workers on the CMAM SURGE PCIMA by adapting it to different contexts (normal situation, lean season, crisis, epidemic, conflict etc.) 

Support closed or minimally active health centres with small medical equipment, maintenance and hygiene materials.

OUR PROJECTS IN HEALTH - NUTRITION

 

ATWA (Adolescent Transition in West Africa) 

Improving the sexual and reproductive health and rights of adolescents in and out of school

 

USAID Kulawa 

This is a health service delivery programme within the USAID Resilience in the Sahel Enhanced II, (RISE II) programmes that aims to improve access to and use of quality health services, and to strengthen ownership and management of these services by communities, local authorities and service providers. 

 

WADATA 

Funded by USAID's Office of Food For Peace as part of its Food Security Development program, the 5-year Wadata Activity uses a multi-sectoral and participatory approach to improve and sustain food and nutrition security and build resilience in extremely poor and chronically vulnerable households and communities.

 

PROGRAMME SPONSORSHIP 

The main objective of the programme's sponsorship component is to ensure that poor and vulnerable children have access to quality basic education. The health component aims at the availability, access and use of health, hygiene and nutrition services for all school-aged children, including those in and out of school.

 

INVESTING IN CHILDREN 

Is an education project, but also aims to reduce child marriage and early pregnancy among girl students to enable them to grow, learn and acquire life skills. 

 

RECOLG (Resilience and Social Cohesion of Cross-Border Communities in Liptako-Gourma) 

An objective to improve the living conditions, resilience to food and nutrition insecurity and conflict and social cohesion of vulnerable populations in the Liptako Gourma communes.

 

GLOBAL HEALTH SECURITY PROGRAMME

Communication on Health Risks and Community Engagement in the context of zoonoses. For the strengthening of CHC coordination systems for infectious diseases and emergency risk communication at national and sub-national levels: Strengthening the country's capacity to design and implement SBC/CREC activities.

 

BREAKTHROUGH ACTION

Aims to improve the health, family planning and nutrition of populations. It is part of a new series of USAID development and humanitarian assistance projects and activities, managed collectively by USAID/Sahel, USAID/Food for Peace, USAID/West Africa, and USAID Missions in Burkina Faso and Niger.
